Week-long protest at Perdue coming to an end

MARYLAND – The Perdue Protest continues in Salisbury, and the protesters are giving their perspective. As this weeklong demonstration comes to an end, the question for animal rights activists is-

Did their protest against Perdue, make their point?

Direct Action Everywhere, known as DXE, aims to achieve revolutionary social and political change for animals in one generation. Matthew Zirbel says many support their cause.

“I think we definitely need to fundamentally reshape what our relationship is with animals- and that starts with changing in very radical ways.”

Corporate Complaints

DXE is protesting practices they say are taking place at Petaluma Poultry in California, Perdue’s subsidiary. So they traveled over 3,000 miles to the Corporate Office here in Maryland, says Zirbel.

“We’ve had mostly positive reactions from the community driving by. A lot of them have seen and gotten our message. A lot of them agreeing I’ve spoken to a couple people now.”

Common Ground

Activists who’ve freed animals from facilities in the past, are now facing prison time. Carla Cabral says they are protesting animal abuse of any kind.

“There’s always chance for middle ground, I think people fundamentally misunderstand or organization. And I think that along the road to freedom for everybody, there are incremental steps forward.”

They plan to continue advocating for animals across America. We have yet to hear back from Perdue with a comment. For more information on the animal advocacy and the work they do, visit their website.
