The Wicomico County NAACP pushes for full funding to public school system
WICOMICO CO, Md. – The NAACP calls out funding disparities in Wicomico County. The group believes the lack of education funding disproportionately impacts black and minority students.
The state covers 80% of the county’s budget, but the plan has changed because of the $3 billion budget deficit.
The NAACP of Wicomico County urges local officials to increase funding to cover areas the state can’t. They recommend raising the revenue cap and exploring options like cannabis funds and property transfer taxes.
Chapter President, Monica Brooks, said this has consistently been an issue, but they will continue to advocate persistently.
“In previous years, when there wasn’t a budget deficit, our council has not funded above maintenance of effort. What we’re asking is, what is a priority?”
