UPDATE: Police investigating after student allegedly brings unloaded gun to Seaford elementary school
3/5 UPDATE: Seaford Police say a 12-year-old has been arrested for possession of a firearm in a safe school zone and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
We’re told the juvenile was released to their guardian pending a future court appearance.

SEAFORD, Del. – Officials say a student allegedly brought an unloaded firearm to Frederick Douglass Elementary School Tuesday morning.
Seaford School District officials say the student was dropped off as a car rider and did not ride a bus, and school staff were alerted to the situation and immediately followed all safety protocols.
In a social media post, the Seaford School District said, “We understand that this news is very concerning for our school community. We had already considered the necessity for weapons detections systems across all our district schools – this incident has accelerated the conversation. We appreciate the partnership of our parents and community members in maintaining a safe school environment for all and look forward to your input and continued support.”
Seaford Police say this is an active and ongoing investigation and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 302-629-6645.
Additionally, Seaford Police released a statement on social media, saying “We want to commend the students and staff at Fred Douglass for their rapid reporting and response to ensure all students and staff remained safe.”
