Law enforcement gives safety tips ahead of Spring break

DELMARVA. – Spring breakers, before you pack up your bags to head on your week-long getaway, Sergeant James Kerr with the Fruitland Police Department has some tips to ensure your home or apartment are safe while you’re away.

Before you head out the door, make sure to run through your vacation security Check list.
Sgt. Kerr said a couple of steps you can take to ward off potential intruders are to make sure all your doors and windows are locked, notify a trusted neighbor that you’ll be gone so they can keep an eye on your property, and activate motion lights or keep lights on in your home.

“If somebody’s driving by looking for a target, and a house, it’s been dark for 3 or 4 days, that’s usually a good sign that somebody may not be there. Just a light being on, whether you can put it on a timer or leave it on the entire time, it does give the presence that somebody’s there,” said Sgt. Kerr.

At Salisbury University, campus police are doing their part in prepping students for spring break. While the campus is expected to be quieter during the break, some students may opt to stick around near campus.

Captain Chris Shockley with university police said if you do plan to stay in town, campus police will also be present, in case of an emergency.

“It’s always just knowing your surroundings; be safe, walk in groups, travel in well-lit areas, and if you see anything, don’t hesitate to call,” said Capt. Shockley.
