Indian River softball starts season strong against Delmarva Christian

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Delmarva Christian and Indian River softball opened their seasons in Georgetown on Wednesday in a game that IR won 10-0.

Indian River jumped out early with a four-run 1st inning that included a two-out two-RBI single from starting pitcher Zoe Quillen.

IR tacked on another run in the 3rd with a two-out triple from Gracie Hoban who was brought home by another RBI from Quillen.

The top of the 5th was another four-run inning for Indian River, with a sequence that included an RBI triple from Sophia Scurci.

In the 6th inning it was another two-out triple from Hoban, who was again driven home by an RBI single from Zoe Quillen. The run made the score 10-0, which brought the game to an end when the Royals were unable to score in the bottom of the inning.

As the winning pitcher, Quillen finished the game allowing zero runs in 6 innings.

After the game, Indian River Head Coach Sara Powell said about the team’s offense, “We talk about when you have a 2-0 count you’re not looking for another ball, you’re looking to drive the ball. When you have a 3-0 count you’re not looking for a walk, you’re looking to drive the ball, and those are some things our batters did today. I just think that making those adjustments is what helped us get through the game.”

On the importance of starting the season 1-0, Powell said, “No better way to start than with a W. There’s a lot of really good things that we saw in the game. We preached before the game just doing the little things right, and I think they came out and did that. Given that we don’t have practice tomorrow, we jump right into a division rival game it was a good way to start.”

Indian River hosts Laurel on Thursday.
