Indian River Vote

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. – The Indian River School District’s current expensive referendum was defeated by district residents on Thursday, March 20th, 2025. The unofficial vote totals were 4,749 in favor and 5,424 against.

Superintendent Dr. Jay Owens expressed disappointment in the outcome but acknowledged the public’s concerns about rising energy bills and the recent property reassessment. He noted that without the referendum’s approval, the district faces difficult decisions regarding staffing and programs due to increasing expenses outpacing revenue.

The referendum sought funding for rising operating costs and staff recruitment and retention. The district may consider holding another referendum later this year.

Superintendent Dr. Jay Owens released a statement tonight in part quote “Our administration and Board of Education will explore numerous options … Despite this setback, we will continue to strive to provide our students with premier educational services.”
