Indian River School District holding public meeting on expense referendum
OCEAN VIEW, Del. – A public meeting is being held Monday night to discuss the Indian River School District’s proposed expense referendum.
That meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Lord Baltimore Elementary School.
If approved later this month, the referendum will result in a tax increase of $24.10 per month or $289.23 per year for the average district tax payers.
We’re told the referendum would cover operating costs, as well as the retention and recruitment of teachers.
Indian River School District Superintendent Dr. Jay Owens previously said it’s been eight years since the district implemented a tax increase and the school district has the lowest school tax rate in Sussex County.
“The goal is to ensure that our community and those in attendance this evening, or at a future meeting, have as much information as possible about the referendum, what it entails, why it’s important, to be able to make an informed decision on March 20th,” said Dr. Owens.
This will be the first of three public meetings about the referendum.
Voting on the referendum will take place March 20 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
