Chincoteague announces increased security measures for Pony Swim
CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. – The town of Chincoteague has announced increased security measures at the Pony Swim after an online threat.
Chincoteague Mayor Denise Bowden said there will be increased patrols for this year’s Pony Swim.
In addition, patrons are not allowed to bring coolers, umbrellas, glass containers, bags or backpacks.
Clear vinyl, plastic or PVC containers and bags will be allowed, however, all items will be subject to search.
Mayor Bowden took to social media on Saturday adding, “We just cannot take the chance of one person getting injured due to something like this. And while nothing is guaranteed in this life, you bet this, the Town of Chincoteague is going to do everything in its power to make sure our residents, our visitors, our cowboys and our ponies are as safe as can be.”
The Pony Swim returns on July 30, with the auction to follow the next day.
