After the Whistle: Wi-Hi’s Tyson Hayward
SALISBURY, Md. – “I just think about like, whoever’s guarding me, I’m better than them.”
Wi-Hi basketball’s Tyson Hayward said that this past season he changed his mentality, and he found his confidence.
“Just from the hard work I put in…Each day I’m training and putting up shots and in the weight room, like every other day, three times a week in the weight room just getting stronger and trying to put on some weight”
While Hayward’s working on beefing up his 6’4 frame, he’s sharpening the tools he’s already got in his belt.
“Shooting threes and getting to my mid-range. That’s really what I work on a lot and it’s really what I do a lot in game.”
After a breakout season in his junior campaign where he averaged 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists per game, the 2nd-team All-Bayside South selection is aiming high for the 25-26 season, both for his own career and for the tribe. “I want to score my thousand points and then hopefully get player of the year…Definitely we want to win 20 games at least, hopefully win Baysides, and definitely win regionals,” Hayward said.
Hayward knows that there’s more work to do, but when he looks back at how far he’s come, there’s one person more than any other that he feels he owes his success to, saying, “I want to thank my mom. Everything she’s done for me, she’s really just pushed me to be the person I am today, and I wouldn’t be half the basketball player without her.”
Hayward says that he does want to play in college. He’s hoping that working on his game will eventually bring him the right opportunity to play at the next level.
