The Sussex County Association of Towns organizes food pantry drive-thru in Georgetown
GEORGETOWN, Del. – A food pantry drive-thru at the Sand Hill Fields Sports Complex in Georgetown, helped community members in need. Mayors, Town Managers, and city officials partnered with the Delaware Food Bank for people all across Sussex County.
Georgetown Mayor Bill West said this was a great way to help the community. “There’s people that need the food, there’s people that need the help, and this is the way to give back to the community.”
Food boxes included fresh produce, canned goods, and non-perishable items. West is the President of the Sussex County Association of Towns and said the group has been meeting to put together this plan.
“I thought up the idea of people helping people, and let’s do a food distribution to help people. These are all mayors and town managers throughout the whole county.”
The Food Bank of Delaware provided the food and served people throughout the county. Lisa Gibbs, the Agency Experience Manager, told WMDT that she was pleased with how many people came. “We served about 90 families so far, and it’s only 10 o’clock. We are here until 11 today, so I’m sure that number will rise.”
Encouraged by the turnout, West plans to host similar events in the future. “Nobody should go hungry, nobody should get wet, and nobody should get cold. This is why we do it, this is what it’s about.”
