SNOW HILL, Md. – A temporary restriction has been issued on shellfish harvesting in Manklin Creek due to a sewer main break.

We’re told crews identified and repaired a 10-inch sewer main break last week near the corner of Ocean Parkway and Cathell Road in Ocean Pines. The break caused approximately 1,200 gallons of sewage to leak into an adjacent marsh that drains into Marklin Break.

Officials say there are no oyster bed leases in Manklin Creek, and those who may have oyster floats or cages in the creek are strongly urged to not consume any shellfish from the body of water for the next 21 days. This is to dilute out any bacteria and strain out potential viruses such as norovirus.

The emergency closure was issued by the Maryland Department of the Environment on February 8th and will remain in effect until March 1st.
