Snowfall beneficial for farmers

MARYLAND – The recent snowfall has been beneficial for farmers in Delmarva.

Many farms need the added moisture because the fall was particularly dry.

Oak Shelter Farm Owner Virgil Shockley said that snow soaks into the ground over days, providing the moisture they need.

The snow is also beneficial because ponds and ditches have had less amount of rainfall in them.

Some ponds are down two to three feet according to Shockley.

“I know it’s a mess for people who have to drive in it and who have to work in it, but as far as the farmers go, the snow absorbs slowly so it’s actually building moisture back up for the fields for the spring,” said Shockley.

Shockley said he hopes to not have a cold, damp spring like the past couple years because it keeps farmers out of the field.
