Senator Van Hollen slams President Trump and GOP colleagues over federal cuts

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Maryland U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen is slamming Republicans over their budget resolution that he says will fund tax breaks for the ultra-rich.

Senator Van Hollen issuing a statement today slamming President Trump and his GOP colleagues after their budget passed — despite several attempts by Democrats to amend the resolution. That includes an amendment supported by Van Hollen that Republicans shot down that would have prevented funding cuts to the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs.

Senator Van Hollen’s statement called out Republicans and blasted the President and Elon Musk:

“Today, we witnessed Donald Trump and the Republicans’ Great Betrayal of the American people take shape right before our eyes. On the campaign trail Trump said he was going to focus on bringing down costs for everyday Americans. Instead, prices are rising and Senate Republicans passed a budget that lays the groundwork to slash vital services for the American people while handing over Trump’s wish list of tax cuts for the ultra-rich. Democrats offered amendment after amendment to bring down the costs of essentials like housing and groceries and stop Republicans from giving a tax windfall to billionaires and cutting Medicare, Medicaid, school lunch programs for kids, and more – but they rejected every one of them. It’s clear that Musk’s takeover of federal agencies has nothing to do with government efficiency and everything to do with rigging the government for Musk and the other billionaires who lined up behind Trump at his inauguration just 32 days ago. While Trump and Republicans attempt to usher in a ‘golden age’ for the already rich and powerful, we will continue to fight for a government and an economy that works for all Americans.”

Senator Van Hollen supported several amendments that he says were blocked by Republicans, including one he touted on the floor of the U.S. Senate that would have helped prevent potential cuts to school meals that he says will impact hungry children across the country.

“1 in 5 kids don’t know where their next meal will come from or what it will be,” Senator Van Hollen said. “So, to ensure that those kids get healthy meals and can focus on their education and studies instead of their stomachs, 91-percent of schools participate in the USDA meals program.”

It’s that kind of funding that Democrats believe is in jeopardy as a result of budget that was passed which they argue lays the groundwork to slash vital services, like free school meals.
