Salisbury City Council inches closer to final decision on cancer-testing kits for fire personnel

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury City Council is moving forward with cancer testing kits for fire personnel. The idea passed through its first hearing at the meeting last Monday. It’s a tool to help protect firefighters and personnel exposed to toxic emissions and gasses.

Due to the heightened cancer risk from exposure, the Maryland Department of Health is funding this project. Council member Michele Gregory said this project is about prevention.

“To make sure they’re healthy and safe, and intervene as early as possible if they have developed cancer. I think it’s something the rest of the council will support.”

The amendment now goes to its second hearing, which will be in the next council meeting. A majority of council must approve the measure for it to pass.
