January sees $8.2 million in sports betting contributions for Maryland

MARYLAND – In just the month of January, sports betting generated $8.2 million in state funding for Maryland.

It’s fourth-best month since the launch of sports betting back in December 2021.

That’s significant because those contributions go toward the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund.

The Blueprint looks to increase state funding for education over the next 10 years.

Seth Elkin with Maryland Lottery and Gaming said for the first seven months of fiscal year 2025, sports betting has contributed nearly $55 million for the Blueprint fund.

That’s near the $60 million amount they had for the entire fiscal year 2024.

“January is typically a successful month just because of the way the sports calendar goes,” said Elkin. “You’ve got a dozen NFL playoff games in January, we had five or six college football playoff games in January including the national championship game, so when you have marquee events on the calendar like that, it certainly ramps up the interest and the wagering interest.”
