Dewey Beach Police investigating high-speed pursuit

DEWEY BEACH, Del. — A high-speed chase on February 4, 2025, led to the arrest of a motorcyclist in Dewey Beach, Delaware, after he allegedly displayed a handgun during a traffic dispute and fled from police. The incident began around 12:40 p.m. when Sussex County Communications alerted Dewey Beach officers to a reckless motorcyclist heading south near the Delaware Seashore State Park.

Officers located two motorcycles matching the suspect’s description and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Both riders sped off, heading north on Coastal Highway, committing multiple traffic violations as they fled. The pursuit continued across the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal Bridge and near the Rehoboth Outlets.

At the intersection of Coastal Highway and Sea Air Drive, one motorcyclist, identified as 25-year-old Thai Reese Hengel of Milton, Delaware, attempted a U-turn but was successfully apprehended without incident. Hengel was charged with felony offenses, including disregarding a police officer’s signal, aggressive driving, and conspiracy. He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.

The second motorcyclist, who also fled the scene, remains unidentified. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
