Worcester County Public Schools Superintendent Lou Taylor to retire in June

WORCESTER CO., Md. – After 41 years of service to Worcester County Public Schools, Superintendent Lou Taylor is getting ready to retire.

“We have the best school system in the state of Maryland and I had the honor and privilege to lead it for the last nine years, and so it’s really a double-edged sword, but all good things must come to an end and it’s time for me to hand the reigns over to the next generation of leaders,” said Taylor.

Lou Taylor has worked with the county school system for 41 years.

His career began as a teacher and coach, before blossoming to assistant principal at Berlin Middle School and Stephen Decatur High School.

Taylor’s time at Stephen Decatur would eventually lead him to be the school’s principal, a title he wore for 17 years.

“The highlight of my career has been watching kids grow, in all aspects of life,” he said.

Taylor’s tenure as superintendent saw many challenges, including leading a school system through the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of his proudest accomplishments was helping transform the technology program before the pandemic.

Taylor said he’s also proud that they have performed at a high level academically as a school system.

“It’s hard to maintain a high level and exceed that, but with great educators in the classroom, great kids, a great team of leaders, we’ve been able to maintain a high level of learning through our state testing process,” he said.

Taylor will not be involved in the next superintendent search, but the school system could see help from Maryland Association of Boards of Education.

Worcester County Board of Education President Todd Ferrante said Taylor has touched many lives and will be hard to replace, adding the search for the next superintendent could span nationwide.

“He’s going to leave a big void, but hopefully we have people in the school system that will step in and they’ll fill that void,” said Ferrante. “Hopefully, with our new superintendent search, we’ll find the right superintendent that can come in and lead the school system like Mr. Taylor has done.”

Taylor said he’s not sure what’s next for him, but is confident the Board of Education will choose the right person to the position.

“I’m just grateful for the opportunity and I know that God has truly blessed me with outstanding people, starting with the our small learners right on up to the outstanding community that I support, or that supports me, and the job that I do here in Worcester county,” he said.

In addition, Taylor said he will be taking 4 to 5 months off following his retirement to spend time with family and recharge.

He said he has not ruled out a future career in politics as well.

Superintendent Taylor’s last day in office will be June 30th of this year.
