Wicomico County Public Library is helping Neurodivergent population

Sensory Bags

SALISBURY, Md. – A local library is trying to reach those under the Neurodivergent population.

The Wicomico County Public Library has created kits that help individuals relax, reduce anxiety, and calm restless hands. Rubab Azeem of the Adult Services Department says this is aimed at Neurodivergent adults.

Neurodivergence is the idea that there are differences in how people think, learn, and behave are normal and not deficits. Azeem says this is a test to see how a way they their part can do to help those who may be struggling in different ways.

“We have noise canceling headphones, we also have fidget spinners, we have the lava lamps, squishy balls, and the poppers just to start off with… We’ve been trying to emphasize a lot in addressing certain needs that we haven’t necessarily addressed for our community. So, this was one of the initiatives that have been a long time coming.”

The Wicomico Public Library in Salisbury says they will start out with 5 sensory bags that can be checked out like a library book starting as early as Monday. They plan to expand as the need arises. For additional questions feel free to call them at 410-749-3612.
