Weather Tidbits: Preventing Snowmelt Flooding

This edition of Weather Tidbits discusses ways that you can help prevent snowmelt flooding on your property. Snowmelt itself may not necessarily pose a great risk for flooding. However, if rain is falling on top of melting snow, that will raise the flooding risk. Especially if the rain is heavy and the snowpack is deep. In this situation, there are ways you can mitigate the risk of snowmelt flooding on your property. First, it’s important to clean as much snow from the roof as possible from the ground with a roof rake. Also, remove all snow and ice from the gutters. Afterward, clear as much snow away from the foundation of the house as possible. Finally, clear any snow from the storm drains so they are not clogged for any incoming water.
