EASTON, Md. – The University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) wants the Eastern Shore to come to Easton to learn about how they’re working to help with the health care shortage.

The event provides an opportunity for people across the shore to come out and learn about the healthcare shortage locally, but it’s especially geared towards high school and college students looking for a pathway into the medical professional field.

UMB is working to educate and prepare the next generation of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and more by laying the groundwork for them to pursue those types of careers.

“We’re trying to educate the professionals and recruit students from the Eastern Shore and then our hope is that we are then going to retain them back on the Eastern Shore,” explained Mary Pooton, director of philanthropy with UMB.

For more than a year, UMB has worked with the communities across the Eastern Shore to help raise awareness to the programs they offer, and raising money for rural scholarships for local students to attend UMB and return to the Eastern Shore to practice and develop partnerships for rural health training programs.

The event will take place Tuesday, January 7 at Londonderry on the Tred Avon, located at 700 Port Street in Easton, Maryland.
