The Town of Berlin has established a 10-year leasing agreement for a new parking lot to help mitigate parking issues downtown

BERLIN, Md. – The Town of Berlin has come up with a solution for its downtown parking problems. Town Admin, Mary Bohlen, tells WMDT they have heard the feedback from the community.

“Something that businesses, visitors, and residents have spoken to is the lack of parking. We’re hoping to help alleviate that.”

The town of Berlin has signed a 10-year leasing agreement for a new municipal parking lot. The space will be located on the corner of West Street and Washington Street.
Bohlen and local officials believe this will help make getting around the area more efficient.

“It will benefit particularly with events and other times of high volume. It will allow for overflow parking and getting some available parking off the streets.”

Parking problems are hindering first responders. Bohlen hopes the new lot will make their response quicker. “It will make it easier for us to discourage people to park on narrow streets. This will push people to the parking lot, and this will be helpful to the bigger apparatus, like firetrucks and ambulances, that run into difficulties if there are too many cars parked.”

The parking lot will be covered in gravel, to make it easier for waterlines. As of now, the town is only leasing the lot. However, Bohlen tells WMDT that purchasing it in the future is a possibility.

“As far as whether we’ll move to own it, that’s not currently part of the land lease agreement, but it would be on the table to talk about in the future.”
