WICOMICO CO., Md. – The storm cleanup continued Tuesday as crews across Delmarva braved the winter weather to clear the roads and shovel all of the snow away.

Wicomico County Public Works had around 60 vehicles out on the road to help clear the snow and ice.

“It’s been a pretty strenuous lift,” said Wicomico County Deputy Director of Public Works Mike Svaby. “We had good preparation going into it for several days before, but we were properly equipped with materials. We were good with salt and our trucks and equipment were up to par, inspected and ready to roll.”

Svaby said cleanup from the snow storm has been a successful event so far.

He said crews distributed 60 tons of salt on the roads, but there’s still more work ahead.

“We will do some trimming next to curbs and road shoulders, exposing those properly,” said Svaby. “Anything that’s not in direct sunlight or may have iced over we’ll be salting and that’s really the large majority of it.”

Now with a large part of the major roads cleared, Salisbury Fire Chief Rob Frampton cautions residents on taking to the roads too soon.

“Starting today, more and more people are seeing their streets cleaned or the major roads are clear if they have to get back to work and they decide to venture out, so we have had a few accidents today,” said Frampton.

For residents that may be frustrated their own streets haven’t been cleared yet, officials say they had to prioritize higher traffic areas, but they will get there.

“Unfortunately you don’t plow snow every season you lose that magic touch on plow operations,” said Svaby. “We do lose a little bit of experience, but we were able to get through it pretty well.”
