Salisbury residents are embracing the snowy conditions, but local business leaders hope the community starts showing more support

SALISBURY, Md. – A snowstorm has hit the city of Salisbury again, this time only coating the roads with 1 to 2 inches. Community members were more prepared than earlier in the week.

Despite that, residents were outside enjoying the elements. Most of Saturday, you could see community members shoveling their driveway and sledding on the Elks Lodge. The snowstorm shocked one resident, Gunner Chancey, after moving from the South.

“I’m from Georgia, so I don’t get to see snow that often. I haven’t seen it in several years, but it’s beautiful, although I’m kind of ready for it to be gone.”

Chancey is not alone, Nicole Blackwater, who owns the Blackwater Apothecary, has struggled with her local business downtown because of storms. “It’s already difficult to have a business down here, so any disruption makes it that much more difficult.”

Blackwater, who is head of the Downtown Salisbury Business Alliance, had to shut down business for most of the week. She encourages city residents to rally behind local downtown businesses. “After all the snow is gone, it’s even more critical to support your favorite local Salisbury downtown businesses, because it was a pretty rough year and the snow makes it even more difficult.”

The storms caused significant routine changes for many residents. Local community member Michael McJilton didn’t leave his house most of the week. However, he continues to hold a positive outlook about the storms. “It’s an opportunity to slow down and go to a different place. For most people, when it snows like this, they think bad, but I think it’s a good time to reflect.”

According to WMDT Meteorologist Erich Ahlf, temperatures will rise above freezing by Sunday and Monday.

Blackwater Apothecary are open Wednesday – Saturday from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
