Motorcyclist seriously injured in Lewes crash

LEWES, Del. – A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a crash Monday evening in Lewes.

At around 5:30 p.m., police say a Suzuki GSXR 750 motorcycle was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway near Old Landing Road, when it reportedly passed an unmarked Delaware State Police Chevrolet Tahoe in the center lane and split the lane between two other vehicles by riding along the dashed road markings. The trooper tried to stop the motorcycle as a result, but it allegedly fled at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly while eluding the trooper. As the motorcycle approached the intersection at Coastal Highway and Melson Road, it accelerated through the red light at a high rate of speed, at the same time a Ford F-150 was crossing through the intersection. The motorcycle and truck then collided.

The motorcyclist, a 19-year-old Bear man, was taken to an area hospital with life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Ford, a 69-year-old Milton man, was not injured.
