Local family picking up pieces after house fire, community offering support
KENT COUNTY, Del. – After a Christmas day filled with holiday cheer and quality family time, the Caverly family was winding down for the night.
But at 6:53pm, Ashley Caverly said the night took a turn for the worse.
“The kids and I were sitting in the living room and kind of heard something. I went to the garage to check on it and I noticed that there was a fire in the garage,” Ashley said.
Ashley, her husband, James, their 3 kids and 3 dogs made it out of the house safely,
but that fire spread from the garage to the home.
Ashley said they lost everything, the roof over their heads, all of their clothes,
even a car that James was restoring with his daughter. A GoFundMe has already raised over $23,000 to help the family.
“The community has really shown up for us; humanity has shown up for us,” Ashley said. “We’ve received a lot of donations, a lot of support from family, friends and community members, coworkers, you name it.”
“Everyone has just shown up to kind of allow us to help create some sort of normalcy for the kids,” Ashley added.
Life can change in an instant, and Ashley said she’s just grateful no one was hurt,
but shared this piece of advice for other homeowners.
“Double check your homeowners insurance policy, make sure you’re current in everything. It’s good to do it once a year, and luckily, we were good,” Ashley said.
