Gas prices rise overnight on Delmarva
"Overnight Spike"
DELMARVA – Getting from point A to point B might cost some people a pretty penny this year. Here’s how gas may guzzle some wallets in 2025.
Maryland
While many may be gassed up for the New Year, they may not be too fond of the fuel prices. The current national average is roughly $3.06 according to AAA. In Maryland, the average is $3.07. That’s 11 cents more than what gas cost the day before, and just one week ago it was only $2.90.
Salisbury resident and U.S. Postal worker Jonene Johnson says she believes this can have a ripple effect. “Everything’s a domino effect. Once the gas prices go up, the groceries will go back up, and it’s everything. It’s all about budgeting.”
Delaware & Virgina
Virginia comes in slightly under the national average with gas prices at $2.93, but that’s still higher than the $2.89 they were paying a week ago. Delaware’s state average price, however, is at $3.02. That’s a 19-cent spike in 24 hours, and 27 cents higher than it was a week ago.
Future of Fuel
The International Energy Agency reports nearly one in five cars sold in 2023 was electric, and that there are over 40 million currently on the road.
Johnson says this isn’t something on her wish list. “I don’t want nothing electric. I don’t trust it. I don’t trust the electric no… I’d rather have the gas.”
Priority over the Pump
According to AAA, some ways to save on fuel are to minimize air conditioning, drive the speed limit, and avoid warming up the engine, even in winter.
And Johnson had some things to say. “It’s all about being wise. I’m a mail lady and I see people driving around all day. I’m like, I mean, you’re supposed to drive, but it’s like, people drive all day. I’m like ‘y’all just burning gas up?’ Not me, not me.”
Johnson’s advice: save where you can, and only drive when you need. For more information on gas prices or tips on saving fuel, visit AAA’s website.
