Former SU student sentenced in alleged hate crime case

SALISBURY, Md. – Some of the Salisbury University students implicated in an alleged hate crime had their day in court, Wednesday.

18-year-old Cameron Guy appeared before a judge, Wednesday morning. He took a plea deal for a false imprisonment charge. His one-year sentence was suspended, the judge citing time served in home detention.

In October, 15 SU students were implicated for luring a man to an apartment under false pretenses and beating him.

Defense attorney, Thomas Maronick Jr. told WMDT this is a win for his client, but the work isn’t completely done.

“The plea that we worked out was a very good plea,” Maronick said. “I think it encapsulated what actually happened, and at the end of the day, Mr. Guy was very sorry for his role in everything. As I said from the outset, this wasn’t a hate crime.”

Guy is no longer enrolled at SU and has started taking classes at a different school.
