Emergency response as the snowstorm continues on the Eastern Shore

EASTERN SHORE, Md.- The snowstorm is the worst Delmarva has seen in the past 2 years. Local officials and emergency response organizations are working to help the community stay safe on the roads.

Ocean City organizations have diligently prepared for the approaching storms. City Manager Terry McGean is advising people to make smart decisions. “Our biggest message is to stay off the road if you don’t need to drive. If you drive, be careful, especially when things freeze again.”

Safety in Wicomico County remains the top priority for officials. In Salisbury, Chief of Police David Meienschein hopes residents stay clear of the roadways so trucks can plow through the snow.

“If you don’t need to go out, staying in is the best favor you can do for yourself and us. This will reduce the likelihood of getting involved in an accident or a slip-up.”

Some students enjoyed their day off sledding down Elks Lodge in Salisbury. Elsewhere in Salisbury, others built snowmen. Resident Maria Brown tells WMDT her child has been waiting for a snow day.

“He loves the snow. It’s his favorite thing, so he couldn’t wait for it to snow. As soon as he woke up, he wanted to play in the snow. Luckily, the neighbor kids wanted to play, so I didn’t have to play.”

In Ocean City, McGean believes the city staff has done a commendable job clearing roads. He emphasizes, though, that residents should not get comfortable.  “Don’t get a false sense of safety here. We’re in decent shape, but we expect conditions to deteriorate again later tonight.”

Salisbury residents may think twice before calling the police. Chief Meienschein assures the public, if they need help, reach out to them.

“If there’s any police concerns, we have extra folks on the road, and we are ready to assist motorists and residential calls in every way possible.”

Officials want residents to check their respective county’s social media pages. Those pages will be updated with the latest traffic information and hazards.
