DelDOT to continue to treat roads overnight across Sussex County

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. – Driving conditions across Sussex County remain a top concern tonight heading into tomorrow morning as Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) crews continue their efforts to keep roads safe as the First State continues to feel the effects of the winter storm.
One of the areas hardest hit by the storm is Sussex County. As snow fell at an alarming rate Monday morning into the afternoon, DelDOT plowing crews remained vigilant, plowing main roads like Route 13 and treating them with salt ahead of dropping temperatures.
It’s the overnight freezing temperatures that have officials concerned as efforts to treat roads become that much harder amid additional snowfall and re-freeze conditions. That’s why DelDOT says they’ll be working non-stop overnight to make sure most roads are as safe as possible come Tuesday morning.
“Roads are passable,” DelDOT spokesman C.R. McLeod told our Rob Petree. “Our crews are going to be working in the overnight hours. Again, we want to make sure that we’ve touched as many of our roads as possible by tomorrow morning. At least once. So, while roads may not be back down to pavement, they’ll at least have that majority of snow layer plowed off.”
Anyone who has to go out Monday night or Tuesday morning should allow for extra time to reach their destinations, including taking extra steps to adapt their driving to what could and likely will be hazardous roadway conditions across Sussex County.
“It’s been a while, so we don’t have that muscle memory in place for that safe driving in these types of conditions,” McLeod said. “So, really important just to be mindful that if you have to be out to adapt your driving to the conditions, slowing down, leaving plenty of room between you and other vehicles is key.”
During severe weather events it’s important to stay informed. Delawareans can register their mobile numbers with the Delaware Emergency Notification System (DENS) at de.gov/dens for updates on emergency closings or hazardous conditions.
