Delaware officials preparing for this weekend’s winter storm

DOVER, Del. – Delaware officials are preparing for what forecasters say could be the most substantial winter storm downstate has experienced in years.

State and local officials are coordinating to make sure the roads are safe and residents are informed ahead of two possible storms that could bring snow to the first state.

“The New Year is certainly going to be off to an active start weather-wise,” said C.R. McLeod, community relations coordinator for the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT).

McLeod tells WMDT News that DelDOT will be wasting no time when it comes to the roads.

“DelDOT forces will be out brining roads,” McLeod told our Rob Petree. “So, if you do see our trucks out spraying that salt water solution, please give them plenty of space to operate.”

It’s been a while since Delaware’s experienced a significant snowfall and, while accumulations are still uncertain at this point, officials are reminding drivers to take it easy.

“Adapt your driving to the conditions,” McLeod emphasized. “Slowing down, leaving plenty of room between you and other vehicles is key, and also, over the next day or two, how are your windshield wipers? Topping off that windshield wiper fluid.”

As with all storms, the risk of losing power is always a possibility. And in the case that happens, you want to be prepared, according to Timothy Cooper, Deputy Director of Public Safety for Sussex County.

“Make sure you have enough water for every individual in your house,” Cooper said. “Typically, you need like a gallon of water per-day, per-each person. And then non-perishable items that you can eat, especially if you lose power. Just make sure that you’re able to keep warm if you have a power failure at your place, and then make sure you have everything you need in case you had to evacuate.”

While this storm is likely not going to be that severe, it’s still a good idea to have the supplies you need so you don’t have to go out in what could be hazardous conditions.

During severe weather events it’s important to stay informed. Delawareans can register their mobile numbers with the Delaware Emergency Notification System (DENS) at de.gov/dens for updates on emergency closings or hazardous conditions.
