Del. man sentenced to 45 years for 2022 murder
GEORGETOWN, Del. – A Georgetown man has been sentenced to over four decades in prison for murdering a man in 2022.
Last month, 26-year-old Kevin Shorter was sentenced to a total of 45 years in prison after being convicted of second degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.
Shorter, who had an ongoing mental illness, reportedly believed that the victim, 38-year-old Paul McCarter, was a threat to himself. Shorter and McCarter were acquaintances who were both members of the local homeless community. On September 7, 2022, Shorter waited for McCarter at the Royal Farms on Dupont Boulevard in Georgetown, pulled out a metal baseball bat, and began beating McCarter. Shorter fled the area, and McCarter was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Christiana Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Shorter’s sentence was the result of a Guilty But Mentally Ill plea agreement.
