Keeping your furry friends safe this holiday season

DELMARVA – The holidays can be a busy and exciting time of year, and while it’s perfectly fine to celebrate with your furry friends, experts have some tips on how to keep everyone happy and healthy.

If your pup or kitty is around when you’re opening gifts, you should keep an eye on them. Sara Smith with the Brandywine Valley SPCA says little pieces of paper, staples, tinsel, and bows can all pose a safety risk if your pets ingest them.

“When it comes to unwrapping those gifts, maybe an idea would be to put up a little gate or a barrier so that your animals stay out of the area where you’re all unwrapping and making a mess.”

Smith says other hazards for pets during the holiday season can include decor and plants. Pets sometimes try to drink water from the Christmas tree or eat poinsettias, which can make them very sick. If necessary, Smith recommends putting a gate around the tree or keep flower arrangements where your pet can’t get to them. Keeping lights and inflatables out of reach of pets is also a good idea, especially if they’re curious.

“You really need to keep in mind, what is your pet going to go after and then figure out how to best keep them safe during the holidays.”

Another tip is to keep- your furry companion away from the holiday feast, especially sweets, garlic, and onions.

Smith also urges pet owners to ensure that their pet has an updated microchip in case they get separated during holiday travel.
