How should you discard your Christmas gift trash? Law enforcement give tips

DELMARVA. – Now that Christmas is over, you might have a bunch of empty boxes on your hands. But you should think twice about where you put them.

Sergeant Benjamin Mills with the Fruitland Police Department said you should not throw big electronic boxes, or other expensive item boxes, in your home’s trash can that sits out in the open, because they could attract the attention of a home invader looking for the perfect crime of opportunity.

“It identifies that those objects that were in that box are most likely in your home, and that’s going to throw up some signs to the criminals out there that are willing to commit crimes to steal those items that you’ve worked hard for,” Sergeant Mills said.

He laid out some tips on what you can do instead to keep your home safe.

“If you have a dump pickup, I would probably wait to the morning of to put it out,” Sergeant mills said. “You might have to get up a few minutes earlier, but it might prevent you from having a crime committed against you in weeks to come.”
