Holiday Lights

Salisbury, Md. – Downtown Salisbury’s annual lighting ceremony took place tonight right at Unity Square, and many came out to celebrate with the community.

Music, performances, vendors and more; The lighting ceremony brings together diverse corners of the community, including those who celebrate holidays beyond Christmas.

Hanukkah

Rabbi Ruth Smith of the Beth Israel Synagogue celebrates Hanukkah, a religious Holiday celebrated for 8 consecutive days. She says they came out, because they have roots in Wicomico County. “This coming year, were coming up right on our 100th anniversary, so we really are a part of the community, and it used to be that every single store was a member of the congregation.”

Kwanzaa

“Umoja” which is Swahili for Unity, is the first of the seven principles for Kwanzaa. This is a Cultural holiday celebrated by African Americans from December 26th through January 1st. Salisbury Kwanzaa Club President Demetria Marshall Leonard says the Unity square is fitting for such an occasion. “One of our first principles is unity, so it is important for us to unify with other organizations in our community, as well as have a seat at the table.”

Christmas

Christmas is celebrated in many ways. Some focus on religion, and for others, it’s about family. Santa tells us why this time of year brings him so much joy. “Because We need to remember that the holidays are about family, we need to remember that we have to have a great time and smile, and enjoy ourselves…And remember, be a good boy, be a good girl, and enjoy your milk and cookies this year.”

Unity

The Christmas Tree, Menorah and Kinara will all be lit throughout the new year, so be sure to stop by and enjoy the lights.
