Century Farmers honored by the State of Delaware
Farming Families
DELAWARE- The Delaware Department of Agriculture honored 5 local farmers as part of the Century Farm Program.
Generational farmers have kept their land and legacy for over a century and the state of Delaware is giving them their well-deserved flowers and a tribute from the general assembly.
Community Commitment
Delaware Department of Agriculture’s Secretary Michael T. Scuse says they honor the commitment the families have made. “Agriculture is the state’s number 1 industry. It’s $13 billion economic activity every year. It means doing about $1.5 million in direct sales to our farms. So, you know when you highlight things like this, I think it seems a message to the rest of the producers out there, the landowners, that we do rake those commitments by the state very seriously.”
Land and Legacy
The Beauchamp family has owned their land since 1903. The matriarch Brian wanted to make sure they got this recognition, and he and his son Michael, and are passing down their legacy to future farmers Michaela, Mason, and Miloh, one crop at a time
“It was something that each one, my father wanted to do before he passed away, and he didn’t get it done. I said, well, let’s do it. And now my grandkids are big enough to see what’s going on with it and how important Agriculture is to us”, says Brian.
His son Micheal adds, “It seems like there’s so many farms and stuff disappearing, and it’s great to see the kids growing up with the agriculture and being able to have the opportunity. Because it does seem like farming is something that you have to almost be born into anymore.”
Other farms that were recognized were The Culver Family Farms, Ellis Farms, and Fifer Orchards, Inc.
