$3 million secured to develop downtown Seaford Riverwalk

SEAFORD, Del. – The city of Seaford plans to tear down the old powerplant on the Riverwalk and replace it with a bigger draw for foot traffic.

The multi-phase project will cost $3 million and Secretary of Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources, Shawn Garvin said DNREC will be just one of many of the stakeholders involved, ensuring the Nanticoke River is unharmed.

“The goal is to– because there’s some groundwater issues– make sure that it’s not migrating into the Nanticoke in the future, and then just making sure anyone who’s using the land in the future is protected from past contamination,” Garvin said.

Plans are still in the works to determine what the land will be used for once the old building is demolished, but Mayor Matt MacCoy said whatever it is will enhance the district.

“In the city of Seaford, this is the number one property that we’re asked about,” Mayor MacCoy said. “To actually show people that we’re doing something now, and those opportunities that are endless, is a very exciting for the city of Seaford.”

And with the river crossing right through the heart of Seaford, Mayor MacCoy is hopeful for the new opportunities that will flow into his city once this project is complete.

“We have a beautiful riverfront, and for me, over the years, we have not maximized that opportunity. A lot of cities or towns would love to have a river in their backyard,” Mayor MacCoy said.
