Worcester Goes Purple offers free showers to homeless individuals

SALISBURY, Md. – A warm shower is one of the simplest things that we often take for granted.

It’s something that President of Worcester Goes Purple, Debbie Smullen, said the coalition is offering free to those who need it most.

“I think to myself often, how much is a shower worth to me? How important is it that I have a shower, for me? It’s very important. What happens is, our vulnerable population, they go sometimes a week, a month without having a shower,” Smullen said.

Worcester Goes Purple parked its mobile shower trailer in the parking lot of HOPE inc. and opened its doors to homeless individuals in need of a shower.

“If you’re outside in the elements and you don’t have access to everyday facilities, the shower trailer is heated and air conditioned, so they’re able to get into a warm environment and be able to take a hot shower and really pause for a moment and get themselves together,” Smullen said.

With more free shower events already on the calendar, Smullen said she’s looking forward to extending the outreach.

“You never know what someone is going through, so this could be the real difference in somebody’s day, in their life,” Smullen said.

The trailer will be parked outside of HOPE inc. the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month, and they’ll be at the Community of Joy Church every 1st and 3rd Tuesday. They’ll also be at the Cold Weather Shelter in Salisbury every Wednesday.
