Weather Tidbits: Driving Safety With Wet Leaves
This edition of Weather Tidbits will be discussing how to drive on a road with wet leaves. Wet leaves on a road can pose as a dangerous hazard for drivers. This is because wet leaves create less traction on the road. In fact, the traction lost by wet leaves is similar to that of ice! With this in mind, allowing extra distance between you and the car in front of you is highly encouraged in situations where the road is covered by wet leaves, using similar precautions to that of an icy road. On a dry road, it is recommended to leave 80 feet of stopping distance. On a wet road, the stopping distance should be about 160 ft. On a road with wet leaves, the stopping distance is recommended to be around 250 feet.
