Veterans come together to express needs to Maryland officials

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The American Legion Post #90 in Cambridge celebrated Veterans from across the Eastern Shore, by listening to their needs.

They got a surprise visit from Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and had the opportunity to share ideas with Commander Department of Maryland, David Heredia, on how to address needs in the community.

“There’s a need for a VA hospital. The closest VA hospital is either up in Delaware or down in Norfolk, outside of the Baltimore area. Being here and bringing awareness, it allows us to advocate on behalf of those veterans on the Eastern Shore, who may need something that’s being missed because they’re on this side of the Chesapeake Bay,” Heredia said.

And Heredia said pouring money into posts can help uplift the veteran community on the Shore and create a welcoming space for them to share their stories with fellow veterans.

“Being part of a community that understands what we go through is important,” Heredia said. “Our families understand the day-to-day things we go through, but to be able to talk in a certain way to a fellow veteran, it’s a lot different.”
