Multiple hospitalized following armed carjacking that led to chase, crash in Dover
DOVER, Del. – Police are investigating a carjacking they say led to a chase and serious crash early Thursday morning.
Just after 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dover Police responded to a report of an armed carjacking at the Wendy’s/Exxon at 1710 North DuPont Highway. The victim reported that he was returning to his car when he was approached by two men wearing masks, one of whom was armed with a handgun. The suspects then reportedly demanded the victim turn over his keys, and the victim complied, with the suspects then leaving in his 2013 Honda Accord.
At around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, officers saw the stolen vehicle in the area of North DuPont Highway and College Road. Police tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. The suspects were driving eastbound on Route 42, approaching North DuPont Highway, when they reportedly failed to stop at the red light and hit the driver’s side of a 2020 Nissan Rogue that was driving northbound on the highway. Both drivers were trapped in their respective vehicles as a result and had to be removed by first responders.
The driver of the stolen Honda, a 19-year-old from Camden, and the driver of the Nissan, a 53-year-old from Hartly, were airlifted to a New Castle County hospital for injuries. The passenger of the Honda, an 18-year-old from New York City, was taken to an area hospital.
All individuals remain in the hospital and are in serious condition, according to police.
Police also found a stolen firearm in the suspects’ vehicle.
We’re told detectives are working to determine if this incident is related to an armed robbery at Wawa on Tuesday.
