How much will your Thanksgiving meal break the bank? Shoppers share their grocery budgets

DELMARVA. – Thanksgiving is one of the biggest days for holiday spending, but just how much does it take to feed a family at dinner?

The price people will be paying for Thanksgiving groceries really depends on how many guests will be sitting around the table. But according to the Farm Bureau, the average family can expect to spend $58.08

This year, Tyrone Douglas will be gobbling up all the Thanksgiving favorites with about 20 other people.

“Turkey, stuffing, mac-and-cheese pumpkin pie, dumplings, yams,” Douglas said.

And the ingredients needed to make those things– sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie filling, a whole turkey, butter, just to name a few. Douglas told WMDT he plans to spend at least $150 this year.

“Groceries are very expensive. You can’t come in the store without spending at least $30-50 on groceries. You’re not going to come out the store spending $20 anymore,” Douglas said.

And with Thanksgiving coming on the heels of an election, and consumers keeping their eyes on price fluctuations, Grocery Outlet owner, Joe Bean said shoppers in the local community are flocking to his discounted store to save on the holiday staples.

“People are coming in, they’re trying to fill the table with the holiday goodies for their friends and family and they’re trying to do it without breaking the bank,” Bean said.

Shopper Michelle Klinedinst spent roughly $80 to feed about 16 people this year, but she hopes the economy shapes out in her favor next year.

“I’m hoping it’s going to be less next year. I’m hoping things are going to be better, that’s my hope,” Klinedinst said.
