Discover Delmarva: Ceramic Zone
WILLARDS, Md- Ceramic Zone in Willards Maryland is a family-owned paint-your-own pottery studio. Offering a wide assortment of options to tap into your artistic side. We met up with the Owner Kim Jones who told us their story and allows you to explore your creative side.
Jones told WMDT how the idea came about for the studio “I’ve always liked crafts my mom always did ceramics. So the two kinds of things just made sense. So once I got the notion to do it. My mom helped me and it took off from there.”
The offerings are always changing as a locally-owned shopped they can adapt to new trends quickly. Constantly adding new pieces and experiences for people this offers a new challenge every time you stop by. You can even bring your designs according to Jones “If you come in with your design. Something on a piece of paper you can trace that out on a plate. And make that your own.”
Jones tells us how the pieces come into shape “Well everything we have starts as a biscuit. So there’s no hand building which some people do look for”. Some bisque will affect the color painted onto the surface too. Jones says any color change you notice there is no need to worry “Three coats even if I don’t glaze it it’s going to be shiny. So the red color will slowly look pink. But when you put it into the high heat of the kiln that’s going to make it turn into the true red color”.
The heat helps to bring out the colors from the piece and give it that shiny glossy pop to help stand out. Jones tells us not all pieces are made equal though “The majority of what we have they considered low fire. It still gets fired to over 1800 degrees. But it’s food-safe with the glaze that we use. But it’s not dishwasher oven and microwave safe”.
Jones says their staple product is sure to bring some holiday cheer “Christmas trees surprisingly. What’s neat about the Christmas trees is we have all different styles and what we call tree paints. It’s all different colors that kind of set into the grooves of the trees”. With a vast collection already on display, the variation of color and technique gives each one a look of their own. They even come with a set of lights to help warm up any room!
Jones says they welcome parties and large groups. All visits are by appointment only, to schedule one and for their hours. Check out their website.
