Dia de los Muertos celebration brought to Salisbury

SALISBURY – November 1st and 2nd are celebrated as Dia de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead.

It’s a celebration of life: remembering, honoring, and spending time with passed loved ones.

Saturday, a Salisbury Dia De Los Muertos brought the Hispanic tradition to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Salisbury.

With altars, known as ofrendas, traditional food and drink, and educational experiences, the group connected the holiday to others in the community.

“It’s important for me to share this with other people in my community. It brings us together. It brings community together because we learn about each other, we learn about the family members that have passed and we’re able to talk about it, and, you know, there might be some things that we have in common,” said organizer Norma Eckard.

She added that the tradition stretches back over 3,000 years, beginning with the Aztecs.
