Del. State adds historic program to athletics

DOVER, Del. – Delaware State with an historic announcement Thursday, as they will now offer Division-I women’s wrestling, becoming the first historically black institution to do so.

The plan is for the Hornets to begin competing during next school year – 2025-26 – the same year women’s wrestling is expected to become an NCAA championship sport.

Women’s wrestling has been exploding recently. It is America’s fastest growing high school sport with plenty of programs here on Delmarva.

This explosion goes all the way to the top, as the United States won two golds in the sport at this year’s summer Olympic games, the first nation outside of Japan to win multiple golds at the games since the sport was added in 2004.

The executive director of the HBCU Wrestling Initiative said his organization has contributed $1.25 Million to help launch the program.
