Del. Judiciary warning of phone scams circulating the state

Scam Alert

DELAWARE – The Delaware Judiciary is warning citizens of phone scams targeting Delaware citizens.

In these scams, a caller claims to represent one of the state’s courts or a law enforcement agency working on behalf of a court, demanding money to resolve an arrest warrant, fine, or some other outstanding matter. Recently, we’re told the callers demand money from people for allegedly failing to report for jury duty. Officials say scammers have even texted copies of a fake “order of arrest” to victims who request documentation and try to direct the victim to a specific non-governmental address to make a cash payment.

If you receive a call like this, you are urged to make note of the phone number if you have caller ID and any names used or claims made by the caller, hang up, and immediately contact your local law enforcement agency. You can also contact courts during normal business hours to check on any claims during the call.

Delaware court officials remind citizens that they will generally notify Delawareans about obligations by mail and will never demand payment in the form of gift cards or through money transfer apps such as Venmo.
