DELAWARE – Democrat Sarah McBride has won the Delaware U.S. House seat, defeating Republican John Whalen III.

McBride is set to become the first openly transgender person to serve in Congress. She was elected to the Delaware State Senate in 2020 and has built a national profile as an LGBTQ+ advocate, raising over $3 million in campaign contributions.

In a statement, Sen. McBride said in part, “Tonight is a testament to Delawareans: that here in our state of neighbors, we judge candidates based on their ideas and not their identities… You have entrusted me with the awe-inspiring and solemn responsibility of representing this state that I love in Congress.”
