Old Union Station still expected to be restored on the east side of Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – The Union Station project is still moving forward with the restoration.

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Jake Day said Salisbury will get the most bang for its buck with this new initiative.

“It’s a project that seems to be moving pretty well, and with pretty significant state investment, it’s a small building but it’s a pretty important historic building.”

The building located on East Railroad Avenue will get the boost it needs, with over a half million dollars in funding provided by DHCD. This includes the renovation of brickwork, roof work, and gutter replacement.

In the early 1900s, the station was a passenger rail service. It traveled north to Philadelphia Pennsylvania and south to Cape Charles, Virginia. Secretary Day believes this investment will breathe new life into the community.

The Truitt Street community center, we’re seeing just recently on Benny Street, the adopt a block center that’s getting ready to have its ribbon cutting.”

There are also private investments that have been made to revitalize the area, “Tidal Health’s recent construction, which received 1 million dollars from my department, for the recent construction of their community health clinic, those are all massive investments when combined, speaks to the transformation of the neighborhood.”

The project will be led by Evolution Craft Brewing Company, the group that currently owns the property. It is currently unknown how the group will move forward with the site. However, Secretary Day remains hopeful things are headed in the right direction.

“I’m hopeful that whatever the owners put into that building is a positive contributor, not only to the neighborhood around it, but to the greater Salisbury economy.”
