The Lanape Indian Tribe is educating the public on their rich history
Native American Heritage
Milford, De. – November is just around the corner, which means Native American Heritage Celebrations are about to start taking place. And in Milford, they want to educate before they celebrate.
The Milford Museum in conjunction with the Milford Library is holding an American History Series Program where dive deeper in the history of Milford, and the contributions of the people who once lived here.
Milford Museum Director Thomas M. Summers says their next history lesion will be on Lenape Indian Tribe located in Kent County. He says these are a people who are ethnically distinct, but delt with many aspects of segregation and discrimination. Chief Dennis Coker will be giving the presentation and Summers says he will be dispelling myths and educating the public.
“There’s always been this misconception about them being referred to as “Moors”, and he’s going to bring that up during the program himself, and address exactly how it came about and the meaning of it itself… I think a lot of people, not only people who have lived here all their lives, but people who have moved here, need to know more about this tribe that’s actually living locally.”
The History of the Lenape Tribe presentation will be Saturday November 9th at the Milford Library starting at 1:00 pm. The event is free to the public and if you want to know more about the Lenape Tribe, visit their website.
