New service at local library encourages literacy in the community

KENT COUNTY, Del. – The Kent County Public Library is bringing a fun new service to the community.

The Dial-A-Story initiative is encouraging literacy by letting children call into the library and listen to one of 11 different stories over the phone. Storyteller Robin Agar is the voice behind each story.

Librarian Hilary Welliver said parents should introduce their children to this service to develop a love for reading.

“Storytelling isn’t exactly a lost art, but it is one of the first introductions that children have to literacy,” Welliver said. “I don’t think that the power of storytelling can be understated, and I think that all children should be exposed to that type of storytelling.”

To listen to a story, you can dial 302-741-4171.
