National Teen Driving Safety Week

DELMARVA – This week marks the start of National Teen Driver Safety Week.

An average of 7 teens die every day in traffic crashes nationwide. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Administration almost 2,608 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers in 2021.

Local police want to remind teen drivers that they face many risks on the road.

Harrington Police Department PFC Brooke Tucker says, “One of the biggest risks in teen drivers is distractions. Whether eating while driving, texting while driving, or even having friends in the car, this does lead to a high probability of accidents.”

This is the time parents need to be active and start the conversation about safe driving on the road among teens.

“Parents need to be proactive and start the conversation about safe driving during National Teen Driver Safety Week,” said Michelle Anderson, director of operations at the National Road Safety Foundation. “Keep the conversations going every day. Teaching teens safe driving behaviors is a shared responsibility, and we all have a part to play.”
